With that inspiration, we move to the sketching stage. Learn how artists plan a composition to guide the viewer’s eyes across the painting. Using color, light and darkness emphasizes your pet’s facial features and expression. Envelop them in lush plants, flowers you can almost smell, or a plain background that says “yes, I am the artist’s muse!”

Your input is vital — revise the sketch until you are happy. Then, the painting process officially begins.

What does quality craftsmanship look like in a painting?

There is no substitute for quality materials. A sturdy wood frame holds heavy duty canvas and includes a gallery-standard wire installed on the back for hanging. Richly pigmented paints rated for lightfastness that retain vibrancy for years to come. Protection from humidity and sun with a matte varnish.

Looking for an eco-friendly option? Sturdy, quality canvases sourced from local thrift stores are made good as new with a personal touch from the artist. This portion of your contribution goes to resources for those who need it most within our community and save perfectly good materials from becoming waste.

Abe’s lovely tuxedo markings allowed me to take inspiration from Monet’s classic waterlilies. Blues, greens and brown meld into beautiful fluff on his chest.

Want it framed? I offer sleek, simple floater frames, installed right here in the studio to ensure the best quality. Or I can provide a referral to a local custom framing service for something a little “extra”.
